What is the function of a prayer wheel?
The use of a prayer wheel derives from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. A wheel with a mantra on top - often om mani padme hum, the mantra of compassion - is made to turn to 'sway' the energy of sacred sounds in space. In this way the surrounding environment, the body and consciousness are purified and loaded with the positive energy of that mantra. Typical is the use of dedicating this positive energy to the well -being of all living beings. In fact, compassion is the desire that all living beings can be freed from the suffering and causes of suffering.
